I’d say Merry Christmas, but a) it has passed and b) you may be sick of hearing it. So happy Boxing Day indeed!
It was nice to see that our position here in the ‘banana belt’ between the two lakes delivered us our annual warm and rainy Christmas. I feared for the frigidity of my beer which lives on the back deck this time of year, but thankfully 6 degrees is acceptable for a Sleeman product. I was not looking forward to trying to make room in my overloaded fridge.
Speaking of overloaded, did you eat well?? I’m pleased to announce that twice (so far) this holiday season I went to bed uncomfortable and somewhat disgusted with myself. Christmas Eve was prime rib between the countless hors d’oeuvres and endless sweets, and Christmas day was the traditional turkey. I fear that my blood may now be the consistency of last night’s gravy, and I prefer not to wear pants with a solid waistband and button for a few days. But don’t we all swear to change the routine in the new year. Pencil me in for eating right and exercise (now accepting bets as to when ‘new routine’ turns to ‘more poutine’). I’ll keep you posted.
My children have turned a corner in their lives. They’ve outgrown the ‘large pieces of equipment’ stage and entered the ‘toys with little tiny bits’ stage. The toys still make noise though. I’ll be braving Wal-Mart after the holidays for more storage bins and more batteries. I could use a few hundred extra square feet at Casa del Cheffer as well for all of our new found loot. Thanks family and friends for spoiling our kids.
Charlie has also reached that stage where he does not see clothes as a viable Christmas gift. I saw at least 3 pairs of socks flung over his right shoulder while his head sinks deeper into the gift bag looking for toys. I remember being that age and feeling that clothing was a necessity and not a treat! At least they are past the stage where the box is more interesting than the toy within!
As for the adults, this was the year of the book, the gift certificate, and the photo. I should officially have a photo calendar in every room of the house, I need a new book shelf (and should subsequently blow up the TV if I ever hope to get these read) and my whole family will be at The Good Earth at some point in the coming year. I wonder if those gift certificates can be redeemed for 2008 Chardonnay??
I don’t know about others, but my proudest fact this holiday season is in how I managed to do all of my shopping without setting foot in the mall. Hallelujah to the internet and the independent shopkeeper!!
So I’d like to give a cheer for Boxing Day. A day for leftovers, toy playing, and naps. I hope you have all had a great break, some great food, and some great company.
Hot turkey sandwich and cellophane wrapped shortbread here I come!!
